The greatest dog that I have ever had, my Lab Lucy

by Barry

My wife and I are proud owners of our first AKC purebred dog, a female black lab named Lucy. We went and picked her out from a small farm outside of the city, and she immediately stood out to us, being one of the more clumsy pups who was always behind the pack. It was love at first sight, and she came home with us that day.

She is by far the greatest dog that I have ever had, and her being a purebred dog, is just icing on the cake. She’s friendly, loyal, loving, and way too smart for her own good.

By the time she was 8 months old, she had figured out that she could open up doors around the house, as we had the lever types instead of round knobs. She had learned numerous tricks, the usual sit and stay, but also speak, quiet speak, high five, play dead (when we point at her).

Our favorite is by far having her jump up on her hind legs and bark when we say the cheer for our favorite sports team. Unfortunately for us, she has just grown wiser with age. Her greatest trick thus far, occurred when I was not home, and I still wonder if it is true.

We let Lucy get on the bed sometimes, but only if she lies on a special blanket, which she knows is hers. She always gets excited when we bring it out, because she knows what is getting ready to happen. While my wife was in the shower, Lucy snuck into the other room, took the blanket off the chair where it had been left, and carried it into the bedroom. She then gracefully hopped on the bed, spread out the blanket, and proceeded to lay down on the bed, without making a sound.

When my wife came out of the bathroom to find our proud purebred lab on the bed, she just burst out laughing. She couldn’t allow herself to become angry towards our pup, especially after seeing her sweet, ‘innocent’ face.
