The Bullmastiff is my favorite purebred dog breed

by Seth
(USA)

I wonder why I don’t see more on TV and movies of the Bullmastiff dog breed. It is an AKC registered breed that is quite popular here in the United States. I’m pretty sure Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa had a Bullmastiff as his running mate in the first “Rocky”.

The Bullmastiff is my favorite purebred dog breed (I have loved and lost a lot of wonderful mutts in my life, too.) I really loved my bullmastiff - he was huge, 120 pounds - but gentle as a lamb. He loved people, and kids could do whatever they wanted to him, he didn’t care. Yet he would scare the living cement out of any intruder with his ferocious black and tan muzzle and huge skull.

I think this breed is preferable to bulldogs because they don’t have the health issues of bulldogs. Bulldogs have such short muzzles, and abnormally short legs and barrel chest, creating breathing and running problems.

The Mastiff purebred dog breed members are impressive, but after getting used to the look of the powerful, muscular, balanced bodies of Bullmastiffs, the Mastiff looked too tall and rangy and awkward to me. Boxers are cute, but not nearly as impressive in appearance.

Mine was the standard tan body and black muzzle, although I did see lots of ones that were brindle or almost a solid reddish shade. Unfortunately, like many large dog breeds, their life expectancy is only around 10 years at best.

I never wanted to try to get another one. He was great for running with. Bullmastiffs are built for stamina as well as some speed - they were used in South Africa to guard diamond mines. No one will mess with you if you are jogging with your Bullmastiff!
