Pugs are wonderful pets

by Walter
(GA, US)

As the owner of an AKC purebred dog I can tell you pugs are wonderful pets. My family’s two AKC bred pugs are both great family dogs with wonderful temperments.

I used to be a lover of large dogs. I didn't ever really care for little yappy dogs that my grandma's always had. You know, the ones that barked at the phone, the doorbell, the dryer, etc., etc. And the ones that just loved to nip at you every chance they got. Not for me.

Our first pug, Yoji was the first little dog I have ever owned and was pleased to see how mild mannered and good with children he was. Yet he was still very playful and not as yippy as many other smaller dogs.

Later, after the loss of our purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback we got our second pug, Gizmo. Gizmo has a totally different personality and is much fatter than our first purebred pug. They both are wonderful with children and are very playful and animated.

One downside of owning a pug, as in Gizmo's case, is the snoring. Both pugs snore, but Gizmo is actually going to require laser surgery to have his nostril's opened up. He has a difficult time breathing and snores loudly, this is actually quite common in pugs.

Another downside, and it could be a lot to do with them both being male, but they are the most difficult dogs I've ever had in my life to potty train. Even when I leave the door going outside open for them to come in and out, they still go in the house. I have taken to putting them in a kennel when I catch them lifting their leg on something and that seems to have helped quite a bit. I would recommend having yours sleep in a kennel but I'm a softy that let's them sleep in bed with me.

Another appealing quality in purebred pug is that they are very social and play well and get along with other dogs so you can take them to the park or wherever without worrying about a lawsuit. So if you’re looking for an AKC purebred dog, I highly recommend pugs, especially for families with children.
