Poodle Grooming - Our Own Horror Story

by Terri
(USA)

My dog is a twelve year old miniature poodle. He doesn't like to be brushed but needs to be groomed routinely. Once I took him to a regular grooming service when he was still young. About two hours later, I received a call that they needed my help.

Three people couldn't calm this little dog. They immediately recommended taking him to a vet that had also had a grooming service. And they asked me not to tell anyone where he went for grooming on that wild day. Scary....

He looked like an intoxicated person took some clippers and just went after him with no plan in mind. Sometimes, I do try to trim around his eyes between grooming appointments. Unfortunately, he needs to have a sedation grooming. This is the only way that professional dog groomers can care for him.

So I have to take him to the vet's office where there is a grooming service. And they sedate him. Every six months, there is a blood test taken to check the sedation medication. This whole procedure is very costly, but he is much more comfortable after being groomed.

Whenever I make an appointment for him, I usually try to get several things done during the sedation. The last time, he had a dental cleaning along with his grooming. There are risks with the sedation, and papers have to be signed by me before they proceed but I am always satisfied with the results after the groomer takes care of him.

I never really thought about it before - about the fact that professional dog groomers don't have an easy job, so I always leave them a good tip for a job well done.
