Our smart, goofy and troublemaking Boxer, Ollie

by Tasha
(MA)

Ollie is my families two year old boxer puppy. He is a purebred boxer and has the personality to prove it. We registered Ollie with the AKC when he was about two months old and his registered name is Ollie’s Great Hope, now we know how appropriate that name was.

It seems his great hope is to not make us so crazy that we get rid of him. Purebred boxers are known for a few standout traits such as jumping up on people. This has been a chore to try and train out of him, we have almost succeeded after two years. The other thing about boxers is they are too smart for their own good.

Ollie looks skinny but he is so strong and is more destructive than my 120 pound Doberman pincher. Ollie has broken two strong metal kennel crates because he has figured out how to throw his weight against it and open the door. When he decided that took too much energy he then figured out how to open the latches with his paws. He now has a Frankenstein of a crate held together with the carbineer clips and cable ties.

When it comes to trouble Ollie has put his mind to figuring out how much he can find. He has learned how to pop the latch on our kitchen trash can with his paw and to knock it over so that he and Orion (the Doberman) can have a feast. We tried to fix that by blocking off our kitchen with a baby gate. He figured out how to get around that as well.

Ollie doesn’t know that he is not a human, he can slide open the screen door of our patio, turn on the outdoor faucet, and knows how to get Orion’s tags off of his collar. Lucky for him that a purebred boxer also has the most expressive face, just when you get mad he looks up at you with an expression that either makes you laugh or forgive him immediately.

He’s the smartest, goofiest, most troublesome dog I have ever met. It seems as though we love him for all of those qualities and more anyway and he is certainly one of a kind.
