Our Chihuahua Was a Chunk - Now He's a Hunk!

by Lacey
(Rome, GA)

I’ve always found that Chihuahuas are an “all or none” kind of dog — they either like everyone, or they don’t like anyone at all.

I never intended to acquire a Chihuahua, but that didn’t seem to matter when I saw little Jimi sitting on the floor, barely able to stand up and walk three steps, because someone had overfed him so badly that he weighed 13 pounds when he should weigh 7.

I agreed to foster the little guy, as long as he got along well with my other dogs, both terrier types. I immediately put this chubby Chihuahua on a strict diet, and within a couple of months he was charging around with the best of them.

That was three years ago, and Jimi is now a fixture in our house. He’s a sweet little guy who loves all people, stands up to the biggest dogs around and dares them to take him on, and guards his rawhide bones with a passion usually reserved for badgers and wolverines!

Not that he doesn’t need to—those “terrier-ists” will snitch his bones the minute he walks away from them! We get a lot of laughs, watching Jimi strut around the living room with a rawhide chip in his teeth, grumbling and snarling like a hundred-pound Rottweiler, daring anyone to try and take it from him. He even wants to carry them outside with him, but we usually confiscate them at the door.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that this little ball of energy was the tired, lame, malnourished little dog that managed to worm his way into my heart three years ago—nowadays he charges around the yard, plays with the terriers and keeps them on their toes (he’s half their size), and literally bounces off the walls when it’s dinner time—he still loves food; all food, as much as he can get, any time. That’s what got him into trouble in the first place!
