My Family Has Owned Pugs for Years

My family has owned Pugs for over 3 years now. Before selecting this breed, we deeply researched many different dog breeds and decided this would be the best for our family which includes 4 children. We first purchased a fawn male followed by a fawn female. Later, we bought our Black female.
Some health issues we have encountered include breathing/respiratory problems, dryness around the wrinkles on their faces, and low tolerance to extreme temperatures. Our fawn female got heartworms and successfully completed treatment, but we learned our lesson. All of our pugs are now on monthly all in one worm treatment.
We care for our pugs first by loving them intensely. They are truly “lap dogs” and crave attention. This is the most important part of being a Pug owner. We also moisturize their faces from time to time, use ear mite drops for prevention, and keep them inside whenever possible to avoid extreme temperatures.
Pugs love to run and play, so we help them exercise by taking them on trips and playing in the yard with them. They LOVE to play fetch with a ball! We also feel that maintaining a clean place for them to live and stay is important for their health. The attention also makes them extra happy and they will love you for the time you spend with them.
To avoid weight gain that can become unhealthy, we monitor the amount of food they eat and purchase quality dog food. Another important aspect of a healthy Pug lies in regular vet checks. Our Pugs see the Vet on a regular basis and we keep them up to date on vaccinations. The overall care and attention to health issues Pug owners need to be aware of is more than with many other breeds.
But they become very attached to caring owners! They are fairly easy to train as they want to please those they love! They LOVE water…to improve the sanitary state of our pugs, they get a minimum of one bath a month. Often they will jump into the tub without instructions to do so…they can be very funny as well!
Our fawn female has had three litters of puppies and our black female just had her first litter. Pugs are wonderful parents, but they may struggle during the birthing process due to their short snout and common breathing problems. Raising these puppies has been a joy for our family. Looking back, choosing a pug was an awesome decision…they are a part of our family and we would not want our home to be without them!
