My dog Zac, a purebreed AKC Yorkie, has a new favorite toy

by Daniel
(TN, USA)

My dog Zac, who is a purebreed AKC Yorkie, has a new favorite toy. It rolls, growls, crows like a rooster, and barks like a dog. I wanted something that would engage his interest and provide entertainment as well.

The day it arrived he went nuts! Some purebreed terrier’s can be a bit high strung but he has always been a pretty mellow boy. From the moment the toy was put in front of him he went wild. I had never seen him interact with any of his toys with such energy.

It was awesome watching him grab his new toy to dance around the room with it. The noises coming from the toy drove him into a state of near frenzy. The first day because of his hyper reaction I had to allow him only fifteen minutes of toy time. Even putting the toy out of sight he still remained agitated, searching for it. everywhere. I spent the rest of the afternoon congratulating myself on what a smart shopper I was!

The next day I took the toy out and he totally was indifferent to it, totally ignored it all day. Madly shaking it, rolling it back and forth within his full view did nothing to peak his interest. Puzzled by his behavior I left the toy on the floor but he didn’t even look at it all day long.

The third day I tossed it into his play area to see his reaction. Just like before he went nuts again! I’m watching him transform into this prancing, barking, highly alert dog. He begins circling the toy as if it were a live thing. He batted it around for several minutes, chewed on the hard rubber casing and then lifted his nose in the air and walked away. Never to touch it again that day.

In the weeks after my toy purchase I have discovered for no rhyme or reason one day my little purebreed AKC Yorkie is very receptive to his toy and other days he is totally indifferent. He seems to always be keenly aware of its location but can go days without touching it. I have come to accept his finicky behavior as one of his quirks and love him the more for it.
