Mitch Baby, My One-year-old Cane Corso
by Elaine
Our dog, Mitch Baby, is a one-year-old Cane Corso Mastiff. He is a purebred Cane Corso Mastiff, also called Italian Mastiff. He is AKC registered, and could also be registered in Italy in a different system; I believe it's called the ICC. Our cane corso mastiff is beautiful and sweet. And big!
Like most purebred Cane Corso Mastiffs, Mitch Baby is very athletic and loves to go for long walks and runs, and to chase balls and other dogs at the neighborhood dog park. The Cane Corso Mastiff is a dog whose lineage is believed to have survived from ancient Roman times, where they were used in battle. They were later, and most often, used as guard dogs on large agricultural operations.
The Mastiff would catch a would-be thief who was trying to steal animals or other belongings, and the dog would hold down the thief until morning light, when the farmers would come out to check on things. Then the dog's master could decide what would happen next. Purebred
Cane Corso Mastiffs today make excellent guard dogs.
They attach strongly to their human family members and will be very protective of their family and the family home. They are also known to be very gentle and loving with their human family members, especially gentle with children, and to show great love and loyalty.
Our Mitch Baby is very loving. He adores to be in the middle of things, though not in a pushy way. (He leaves that to the miniature dachshunds!) He still has some puppy energy, but is becoming more calm and dignified each day. He is a beautiful sight, out on a walk, with his strong build, long legs, and massive head. His fur is smooth and thick, and is a very deep black with bands of a caramel brown running through it. This coloring is called black brindle.
I feel proud walking him through the neighborhood, and I feel safe as well--a very nice bonus. He holds his head high and walks next to me, at heel, and I feel honored that this giant beast who could do what ever he wants is choosing to walk quietly next to me. Thank you, Mitch Baby!
