Purebred Dog Breed of the Month• The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is also referred to as the GSMD. • The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, is the largest of the traditional Swiss herding breeds, the Sennenhunds. • Swissie's are believed to be in the ancestry of both the Saint Bernard Dog and the Rottweiler. • The Swissy was originally a used as a herding dog, but was later used for draft work. • Swissie's are sometimes referred to as "the poor Swiss farmer's horse." • In 1908 the Swissy was listed the Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund (Greater Swiss Mountain Dog) in the Swiss Stud Book. • The GSMD is well known for its beautiful tri-color double coat (black with rich rust and white markings). • "Puppyhood" in a GSMD may last 2-3 years - they are very slow to mature. • Overall, you will find that when compared to many other purebred canines, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is quite healthy. • The GSMD was introduced to the U.S in 1968. • Swissies are considered a dry-mouthed breed and do not drool any more than Labs or Collies.
