I found my dog in a box on the side of the road

by Tracey

My little Moo

My little Moo

In July of 2008 my brother and I were traveling down a deserted road when we saw a box on the side of the road. We pulled over, only to find twelve puppies left for dead. Since we didn’t have the heart to leave them there, we took them all home and put them in our bathroom until we could decide what to do with them.

The next day, I went out and bought twelve leashes and collars for each of the pups. I decided to take them all to a church picnic and see if we could give them away. All of the dogs were taking a nap, but one dog stood up and looked right at me with the most pitiful face. I picked her up and knew she was for me. She chose me.

My family and I took the other eleven dogs to the picnic and found homes for all of them in less than an hour. I could not wait to get home to see my new pet dog. She has the most beautiful black and white markings so I named her Mooshi. It means small, cute little girl, and I call her Moo for short because she looks like a cow.

She was so sick and starved that I did everything I could to get her better and after multiple vet visits, she was as healthy as can be expected. We have come a very long way since the day I found her in a box.

Now she is the princess of the house, and she knows it. If we have cake, she gets her own cupcake and every time we go somewhere she gets a treat or new dog toys. Moo has become so accustomed to this treatment that she has learned the words, ‘treat’ and ‘toy’, along with ‘ride’, ‘ball’, ‘outside’, ‘park’, ‘night-night’, and ‘light’. My family and I have tried to teach her dog tricks, but she is full of personality and stubborn, so she refuses to cooperate.

Everyone has been amazed at how smart she has become. My family and I talk to her quite a bit so she howls and barks as if she is trying to talk back to us. After the last two years, Moo is no longer a small, cute, little girl. She has grown into a fifty pound teddy bear.

I call her my Moo bear because she loves to cuddle and she makes the cutest growls when she is happy. I really do not know what I would do without my Moo.
