I Found My Akita at the ASPCA!
by Terri
Last September, after searching almost every purebred Akita breeder in the country, I just happened to go to the local SPCA website, and there staring at me was a beautiful purbred Akita up for adoption! I was so excited at finally finding the exact pup I was looking for, that I raced across town to go look at him. He had only been there a few days, and I was so afraid someone might take him before I got there.
Lucky for me that didn't happen. I took him outside, and it was love at first sight. He was a huge puppy, still not even full grown, and they would only release him to someone who had raised Akitas before, as I had. My husband accompanied me to pick him up the next day, and he also fell in love with the pup. We brought him home and introduced him to our older female Akita, not without a few bumps and bruises until they settled in with each other.
His name is Sammy, and even though I have had my female twelve years, he is my favorite. I have never met such an affectionate male dog. He follows me everywhere, and helps with everything I do. He does laundry, cooking, cleaning the stairs (following me down one by one) and even shares yogurt with me before I go to the gym.
Sammy also sleeps in bed with us at night. (How do you tell 120 pounds to get off the bed? He has grown to be a very much loved part of this family. Somewhat spoiled since he likes rope toys and playing tug of war every day. I truly believe I was sent to that web page to find him, and give joy and love to a dog who truly deserves it. I had lost my other male dog almost a year before, and was heartbroken. Then along came Sammy and made life fun again.
Pedigreed Pups:
