Not the dog breed for everyone, this dog breed can certainly be quite the handful with any "passive" owners - to own and live with a Chow successfully you need to make sure that you are the alpha figure in its life. Chows are well known for their unusual blue-black tongue and also for their very straight hind legs which gives them a very unique gait as well. Overall this dog breed can be quite lazy and you need to encourage them to participate in physical activities daily. Chows are smart and almost cat-like in their intelligence and do very well with clicker training but can easily become bored with repetitive tasks and refuse to participate. It has been confirmed through recent DNA analysis that the Chow is one of the oldest breeds of dog known today. These dogs are well known for their characteristic bear/lion look, scowling expression, complete with that full coat, arched tail and black tongue. Grooming must be done several times a week to keep all that coat under control. These dogs come in five different colors: red, black, blue, cream and cinnamon.
