Facts and Information

Chow

Dog Breed of the Month Sept 09 - Chow

• As a pet, the Chow is very loyal to its own family and is also well known for bonding tightly to its master.

• Not the dog breed for everyone, this dog breed can certainly be quite the handful with any "passive" owners - to own and live with a Chow successfully you need to make sure that you are the alpha figure in its life.

Chows are well known for their unusual blue-black tongue and also for their very straight hind legs which gives them a very unique gait as well.

• Overall this dog breed can be quite lazy and you need to encourage them to participate in physical activities daily.

• Chows are smart and almost cat-like in their intelligence and do very well with clicker training but can easily become bored with repetitive tasks and refuse to participate.

• It has been confirmed through recent DNA analysis that the Chow is one of the oldest breeds of dog known today.

• These dogs are well known for their characteristic bear/lion look, scowling expression, complete with that full coat, arched tail and black tongue.

• Grooming must be done several times a week to keep all that coat under control.

• These dogs come in five different colors: red, black, blue, cream and cinnamon.

• To own a Chow you must remember these words - socialize, socialize, socialize!!
