Dog Breed of the Month Feb 2009 -
Gordon Setter

Gordon Setter puppy

Dog Breed of the Month Feb 2009, Gordon Setter

• The Gordon Setter dog breed originated in Scotland.

Gordons are bred to run and hunt and will still need a lot of exercise even if you don't plan on using them out in the field.

• Weekly brushing and combing of the coat is a must to avoid matting and knotting.

• It is also really important to keep their nails and all the hairs on the bottom of all their feet and between their toes well trimmed to keep their feet healthy.

• Overall, they are an excellent choice of dog breeds for people with children.

• Be aware that bloat is common among many of the deep chested dog breeds, like the Gordon Setter.

Hypothyroidism, unfortunately, is fairly common in Gordons.

Gordons are the heaviest of all the setter dog breeds - males can reach 27 inches in height at the withers and weigh up to 80 pounds in weight.

• This dog breed is always black in color with distinctive markings of a rich chestnut or mahogany color which appear on their paws, lower legs, throat, vents and muzzles with one spot above each eye and two spots on their chest.

The Gordon Setter dog breed is very slow to mature. Typically they do not hit their prime until about the age of three years or so.

• This breed of dog has an outstanding sense of smell and makes an excellent bird dog. It can point when it finds a bird scent and retrieve a felled bird as well.
