Dog Breed of the Month - January 2010 - German Shorthaired Pointer

• These dogs are also known by the names - Deutsch Kurzhaar, GSP and German Short-haired Pointing Dog.
• The GSP is a terrific fit especially suited for an active family. • Their short coat is very easy to groom and they shed an average amount. Check the ears and toes after any swimming exercise and dry them thoroughly to keep them from getting a chill. • These dogs make an excellent jogging partner because they are a real "people dog," and really enjoys any activity done with their family pack. • They do require a lot of physical exercise - remember, they are a working dog breed. This can't be stressed enough. • Training is very important - these dogs love to learn but they can become bored with repetition or with a newbie owner who cannot provide enough of a stabile environment for them. • The GSP coat colors vary a bit and can include: liver and white, solid liver, liver roan, liver patches or ticked, and also white ticking. • Originally, the German Shorthaired Pointer was created to be an exceptional and also versatile gundog. • These dogs can be great with older children too.

"Jesse has a new dog. You may have noticed that his former pets have been peculiarly unfortunate. When this dog dies every employee in the White House will be at once discharged." -- Ulysses Grant to White house staff when his son got a Newfoundland pup, and after others of his dogs had died mysteriously
