But you want to be sure they’re attracting attention for their positive qualities – not because they’re being obnoxious or a nuisance, or because others are concerned about your pet’s welfare.

One of the best things to do before taking your dog out in public to find a date is to train the dog well. Once the dog is well-trained, spend more time training. Then more time! It’s basically impossible to over-train your dog. The more you can do, the better.

Sure, badly behaved dogs can be cute too in a weird sort of way (think 101 Dalmatians or Marley) but training is a much safer bet for you and much better for your dog too. The better trained your dog is, the more people will want to interact with him (and you too) – and the more you’ll want to interact with him too!

Why not do a few training sessions in public? The dog will get to be mentally stimulated in a new and presumably distracting environment (improving the training generally), and you will send off a vibe of being mature, in control, and stable – all qualities that someone worth dating should be looking for.

You already know that your dog is great, and if the new person you meet turns out to be a “keeper” they’ll have plenty of time to learn about how awesome your dog is too. Don’t overdo it of course, but redirecting the conversation to focus on the other person is a great way to make a first impression.
