Colby’s Favorite Toy - stuffed blue lamb

by Tim
(USA)

Amid the toys that keeps the cats occupied lies one that is strictly for Colby, my dog. I have no idea why but this silly stuffed blue lamb with a white face is his favorite toy.

It’s about fifteen inches long and contains a squeaker in both its front paws on in its belly. Now this little Cocker Spaniel takes great delight carrying it around in its mouth and attempting to find the squeakers just to get that sound he delights in hearing. Of special interest to him is to pounce on it then carry it around shaking it just make sure he has done his job of “killing” it properly.

This is the second dog I have owned that loves this soft toy. Somehow it has gone through five years of staying intact in spite of abuse galore. All I need to do is occasionally bag it off the floor or bed and give it a wash.

Somehow, for the dog, the whole scenario has changed once it’s washed. Usually when I toss it to him after being washed, he turns and gives me a rather confused look. How dare I change the scent that he was so used to?

Once he gets over the dastardly crime I committed by cleaning it, he will usually take it off to one of the beds and resume his “torture” again of his favorite “prey”.

Why dogs’ favorite toys seem to be something that they can shake and prey upon seems to be the best of toys for them. It occupies their time and keeps them happy day after day. They also help tremendously from destructive behaviors.
