Yorkshire Terrier - Purebred Dogs and Puppies
A member of the AKC Toy group, The Yorkshire Terrier is an independent dog, but a devoted companion and a combination of England's finest terriers, made up of the Clydesdale terrier, English black and tan terrier, waterside terrier, and the Paisley terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier competes with the Chihuahua for the title of the world's smallest dog.
By the late 1800s, Yorkies had made their way to the U.S. In the early 1900s the majority of dog enthusiasts deemed the smaller sized Yorkshire Terrier, of the variety of sizes possible at this time, was preferable.
Despite his small size he is more than willing to act as a guardian for his master and makes an excellent watch dog. The temperament of this dog breed is that of a bold, confident, and courageous animal.
Always eager for fun and adventures of any type, this dog can be a bit aggressive towards other small animals and strange canines. It definitely maintains that old rough-edged terrier spirit.
Although the coat is easy to care for, it can be time consuming and necessary in order to keep your dog in healthy condition. Grooming must be done on a regular basis. It's long, silky coat mats easily and needs to be brushed and combed daily. He needs an occasional trim and can be kept in a shorter pet clip for a lesser maintenance.

Its blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of the body.
The body is neat, compact, and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance.
The Yorkie needs plenty of exercise but can get all of the physical activity it needs by running from room to room inside of it's own house or apartment. Of course this does not mean that they should not go outside. In fact, they love to take a brisk walk with their owner. Just be sure to keep your dog on leash to avoid problems with other small animals.
One other thing, as far as living arrangements are concerned, this dog breed is not meant to live outdoors. They prefer the companionship of its family. If you must leave your Yorkie outside for any short period of time, just be sure that there is plenty of shelter and adequate bedding.
Due to the Yorkie's small size, they stand between 7 to 9 inches at the shoulder, and usually under 7 pounds in weight, the Yorkshire Terrier can easily be injured by small children - if you are considering a Yorkie you must be able to supervise the dog around small children at all times.
The Yorkshire Terrier has a lifespan of up to 16 years when raised in a positive environment by a health minded dog owner. Fortunately, the Yorkie has no major health concerns that we know of. And the only minor health concern to look out for is patellar luxation.
Veterinarians do suggest, however, that dog owners have their Yorkies specifically tested for eye problems, knee dysplasia, and have a liver ultrasound. The Yorkie has strong terrier-type teeth that should be cleaned by a vet at regular intervals. This breed tends to lose his teeth at an early age, sometimes as early as 3 years of age.
An apartment is perfectly adequate for this little toy dog breed that only needs minimal exercise to remain healthy and happy. He is healthy, fearless, and a good watchdog - affectionate to his owners though shy with strangers.
He needs early socialization and has often been described as a big dog inhabiting a small dog's body. Be forewarned, Yorkies can be barkers, very difficult to housebreak and inclined to dig if left alone in the yard.
