A new member of the AKC Miscellaneous Dog Breed group, the Wirehaired Vizsla is a completely different dog breed from its more commonly seen cousin, the Vizsla, which is smooth coated.
This rare dog breed is also from Hungary and comes in shades of russet, gold and even sand in color. Its short coat is wiry and dense with an water-repellent undercoat. They also have fairly pronounced eyebrows and a scruffy little beard area and their tail is often docked to about 3/4's of its original length.
These dogs are also known by the names: Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, WHV and Drótszőrű magyar vizsla.
These gentle dogs are very intelligent, natural born hunters on both field or in water, with an excellent ability to excel in training. They can both point and retrieve and do well when stimulated with both mental and physical challenges.
And as you might imagine, these dogs are excellent swimmers and love the water. These dogs must have a great deal of exercise - so if you are a couch potato then do not get a Wirehaired Vizsla as a pet - otherwise you will both be greatly unhappy. WHV's that do not get enough exercise can easily become destructive, depressed, OCD or even extremely hyperactive.

The WHV are great family dogs that love being with their owners - but please make sure that you socialize them well. And they do well with children as well. The best home for one of these dogs is in a home where they get to be with their owners a lot of the time and have access to a large fenced yard where they can get a lot of exercise.
Remember, these are hunting dogs so do not trust them around small animals such as hamsters, rabbits and other small pets that you may have in your home. They might do fine with cats if raised with them from an early age but be careful even then. Again, socialization is very important.
