West Highland White Terrier -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

Description

A member of the AKC Terrier group, The West Highland White

Terrier is ALL terrier.

They have a large amount of Scottish spunk, determination, and devotion crammed into that small, white body.

Westie's can be very good with older children, and with other dogs, however there can be some same sex aggression issues, so be forewarned.

Outdoors they are good hunters - speedy, and cunning, with great intelligence.

Keep in mind also that this spunky little dog breed was originally used as a working dog, hunting badger, fox and rat.

The average size for a West Highland White Terrier dog is around 11 inches in height. Additionally, there is no particular in the United Kingdom.

In the house they are all that can be desired of a pet: faithful, understanding, and devoted, yet happy and light-hearted. This is a game terrier and has a very strong will.

The West Highland White Terrier coat is about two inches long, white in color, hard, with plenty of soft undercoat. The West Highland requires professional grooming every few months. They can have issues with dry skin and bathing too frequently may aggravate these problems.

Another thing concerning grooming, if you have a really busy lifestyle and don't have the time to spend on grooming, maybe you should think twice about getting this dog breed. His coat needs to be brushed and combed everyday and trimmed twice a year, particularly around the neckline.

Living with cats and other small animals can be problematic at best. Typically these dogs are under 20 pounds in weight and enjoys a lively game of ball.

Best home: The West Highland White Terrier will be happiest as an indoor pet that is allowed to run around inside the house and gets enough chance to be taken out for a walk. Additionally, they are relatively easy to train which, combined with their attractive overall appearance, has helped this dog breed has gained an enormous amount of popularity over the recent years.

Country of origin: Scotland
Lifespan: 12-16 years
Colors: White
Known health problems: Skin problems, allergies
Famous Westies: Doggie on King of the Hill; Cesar, mascot for Cesar brand dog food; the mascot for Black & White (a brand of Scotch whisky) is a Westie

"I had a linguistics professor who said that it's man's ability to use language that makes him the dominant species on the planet. That may be. But I think there's another thing that separates us from animals. We aren't afraid of vacuum cleaners." - Jeff Stilson
