Welsh Terrier Purebred
Dog Breed Information

A member of the AKC Terrier group, a Welsh Terrier can make an excellent city or apartment dog. The Welshie is a very old dog breed that was developed in Wales. He can be very stubborn.

The Welshie is a sturdy, rugged, friendly, outgoing, and playful dog who loves people, is always alert and ready for action. The legs, under body, and head are tan; the jacket is black or occasionally grizzle. The tail is docked to a length meant to complete the image of a "square dog"- meaning they are approximately as high as they are long.

Originally they were bred to hunt fox, otter, and badger and are also a close relative to the Irish Terrier.

His appearance is very similar overall to that of the Airedale Terrier and also they also share many common characteristics with both the Irish and Lakeland Terrier dog breeds.

This dog breed stands at 14 to 15.5 inches at the shoulder and weighs approximately between 18 to 22 pounds. He enjoys a nice run in a wide-open space from time to time. They can easily adapt to living in an apartment as long as he is given plenty of walks and runs.

The Welsh Terriers native home is Wales where it was used extensively as a sporting dog and it's wiry dense coat requires weekly brushing to keep it in good condition as well as regular trimming every 3 months or so.

They are good with older children, however they are not known for their friendliness toward other animals and cats can trigger its hunting instinct. They do tend to be dog-aggressive and they do have a high prey drive. Best home: with an active family with older children and a fenced in yard.

Country of origin: Wales
Lifespan: 14-17 years
Colors: Tan with a black "jacket"
Known health problems: Epilepsy, glaucoma, allergic skin conditions, thyroid abnormalities

"A dog, I will maintain, is a very tolerable judge of beauty, as appears from the fact that any liberally educated dog does, in a general way, prefer a woman to a man." - Frances Thompson New York Times Magazine May 14, 1967
