The breed came close to extinction around the 1950's. The exportation that occured in the 1960's and 1970's helped pave the way for the breed to come back into a better population, number wise. This dog breed originated in Tibet as a guard dog and flock dog . They make an excellent family protector. A large breed, these Mastiffs can weight between 150-200 pounds and do require frequent grooming and moderate daily exercise.
