The fiesty terrier group dog breeds were bred to tirelessly hunt

vermin - both above and below ground. Think of them as the "pest controllers" of the dog world if you'd like.

You can also call them the clowns of the dog world, due to their fiesty and independent nature and their love of life. They are great bundles of energy - oftentimes in small packages.

Typically, these dogs have little tolerance for any other kinds of animals - including other kinds of dogs, any small fast moving animal, the postman, the delivery man or any other "intruders" of any kind.

Overall, terriers are well known for having a lot of "attitude" - and they're always ready for any kind of "disagreement". Terriers are best described overall as being tenacious in temperament. They oftentimes act first and think afterwards.

Most terriers have wiry coats that require special grooming to maintain their special and characteristic appearance. Some were named for what they were bred to hunt while others were name for their place of origin.

Overall, terriers make great pets, but require determined owners to match their dogs' spirited personality. If you are looking for an alert, playful and affectionate friend, then you would probably be well suited with any member of the terrier group.

Our dog breed directory is designed to present you information about all of the different AKC recognized terrier breeds, and to also help you choose the best type of dog for you. Feel free to browse around for your perfect canine friend.

Within each individual terrier dog breed profile, you can see photos, a short dog breed video further illustrating the dog breed being discussed, and read information about each kind of dog. Have fun reading!
