It is the longest and lowest of all the Spaniel breeds. The Sussex loves the freedom of the country, but will easily fit in as a city dog as long as he is given plenty of exercise. It is a loving, devoted companion, especially for families with children. The Sussex places his family and friends first and is somewhat cautious with strangers. Once you are accepted as the friend of a Sussex you will have a friend for life.

The rich golden liver color is unique to the breed and it's coat requires a fair amount of grooming every week. Its short legs, massive build, long body, and habit of giving tongue when on scent makes the breed ideally suited to penetrating dense undergrowth and flushing game within range of the gun. The Sussex played an important part in the origination of the Field Spaniel. Many think that the Sussex is very similar in overall appearance to the Clumber Spaniel.
