Sporting Group - Gundog Group
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

Sporting Dogs Page Header

The many different dogs of this sporting group were

bred primarily to help man find and retrieve many kinds of game in the field and water.

This group is also called the gundog group in Europe and many of the dogs in this group are of European origin.

Well known for their incredible instincts in both the water and woods, many of these dog breeds continue to participate actively in hunting and other field trial activities today, actively retrieving and hunting game - be it feathered or furred.

Members of this group have always been the essential accessory for the hunter, especially before hunting with guns became popular. At this time they were popular with hunters especially in the finding of birds.

After guns became popular in the 1700's hunters decided that they also needed a dog to retrieve the birds that they had shot down - hence the development of the retrievers.

Sporting dogs need regular, invigorating exercise on a frequent schedule. The sporting dog breeds are well known also for their easy going temperaments and the fact they they make little noise overall. They are intelligent dogs and possess a willingness to please their owners.

Our dog breed directory is designed to present you information about some of these different Sporting Group (Gundog group) breeds, and to also help you choose the best type of dog for you. Feel free to browse around for your perfect canine friend.
