Silky Terrier - Purebred
Dogs and Puppies

A member of the AKC Toy dog group, The Silky Terrier is a true "toy terrier". It is also known by the name of the "Sydney Terrier".

He is moderately low set, slightly longer than tall, of refined bone structure, but of sufficient substance to suggest the ability to hunt and kill domestic rodents. His coat is silky in texture, parted from the stop to the tail, and presents a well groomed appearance.

The Silky's coat is his crowning glory - it is virtually odorless and non-shedding. The coat needs to be brushed for about ten minutes every day to keep it shining and free of mats.

His inquisitive nature and joy of life make him an ideal companion and adaptable to most lifestyles. FYI, it is not a "mellow" lap dog by any means. It is a spirited little dog with a good degree of physical strength.

Silkies are good with children as long as the children treat them with kindness and respect but they are not generally trustworthy with other pets and can get snappy and jealous around other dogs.

Developed around the turn of the century in Australia from crossings of native Australian Terriers and imported Yorkshire Terriers, this dog breed encompasses many of the best qualities of both.

Country of origin: Australia
Lifespan: 15-16 years
Colors: Tan and various shades of blue
Known health problems: Luxating patellas, progressive retinal atrophy, Legge-Calvé-Perthes disease (deteriorating hip joint)
