Sealyham Terrier -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

A member of the AKC Terrier group, The Sealyham Terrier was originally bred in Wales in the 19th century and takes his name from Sealyham in Haverfordwest, Wales United Kingdom.

This dog breed was developed by using other sorts of terriers, each with proven abilities such as hunters of fox, badger, and vermin. The Sealyham was bred to work with other Sealyhams in hunting packs.

As a result of this, a whole group of Sealyhams can peacefully live together. The Sealy is a tough little sporting dog that has a sturdy, strong, short-legged body similar in shape to that of the Scottish Terrier. He has a very long head, folded ears and a docked tail.

These terriers have a medium-length coat that only sheds a little, is wiry and coarse in texture with a softer undercoat. Daily brushing and combing with a wire-toothed comb is necessary to keep the coat in tip top shape. One other thing, the Sealy needs hand stripping about twice a year in order to preserve the texture and luster of their coat.

The Sealy loves people. They really enjoy being house dogs and companions. Overall, Sealys are not as rowdy as some of the other terrier breeds.

The Sealyham is an affectionate companion with plenty of terrier spunk. He is extremely playful, eager to please, and a very sociable breed of dog. They also make an excellent guard dog.

Overall, they are somewhat reserved with strangers, fairly independent, and generally good with other pets, although they can get very dog-aggressive.

The Sealy may have independent tendencies, but will always be devoted and loyal to his family. The Sealy is a hard worker: powerful, and determined, and full of true terrier spirit - always ready to go, go, go. This dog breed also has a strong urge to chase and dig.

They are great watchdogs, great working dogs and a tough competitor in the show ring. As a terrier, remember, he will have a high prey drive with a tendency to chase smaller animals. These dogs can be stubborn as well so training and socialization that should start right away from puppy hood.

The body of the Sealyham Terrier is white while the head and ears may be colored. Typical colors may range from lemon to tan and badger in various combinations.

The Sealyham Terrier stands 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder and weighs typically between 20 and 24 pounds. These little dogs do not need a lot of physical room so an apartment or small house is fine for them as long as they get some exercise an average of twice a day.

Professional trimming or stripping is needed to keep the dogs double coat in tip-top shape. Essentially, they are a non-shedding dog, and the fur is removed by the owner either by stripping the dead hairs from the coat or by monthly clipping. They have a medium-long coat and their tails are customarily docked.

"When a doting person gets down on all fours and plays with the dog's rubber mouse, it only confuses the puppy and gives him a sense of insecurity. He gets the impression that the world is unstable and wonders whether he is supposed to walk on his hind legs and smoke cigars." - Corey Ford
