Of all the modern dog breeds, this dog breed is most nearly akin to the primitive dog - there is no admixture of wolf or fox in their strain. This breed takes its name from the Samoyed people (now known as the Nenetsky people) of the Siberian tundra. This dog breed was used by the nomadic Nenetsky peoples as the dog breed to guard charged with herding the reindeer and also as a sled dog. This hardy little dog breed has remained relatively pure for many centuries. As his work lies in cold climates, his coat should be heavy and weather-resistant, well groomed, and of good quality rather than quantity. Sammys have a fluffy white coat which sheds a great deal, year-round. Original Sammys came in many different colors, however the breed standard today requires for the coat to be white in color, cream, biscuit, or white with biscuit shades. Any other colors are considered to be disqualifications. Their eyes should be dark, and the lips, nose and eye rims outlined in black. The Samoyed stands around 19 to 23 inches in height at the shoulder and usually weighs between 45 to 65 pounds. Overall these dogs will have a medium-size body that is graceful, strong and athletic and a cute little face that always seems to be smiling. This little dog breed simply loves the snow and is happiest out in the wide, open spaces. A house with a fenced yard is very important and any owner of a Samoyed should be an active and dominant leader that enjoys an intelligent and challenging dog. Country of origin: Siberia
