Russell Terrier - Russell Terrier Puppies

The Russell Terrier is a new member of the AKC Miscellaneous Dog Group. These dogs are also descendants of the working terrier dogs of Reverend John Russell as are the Parson Russell and the Jack Russell.

Before we get started let me say right now that this is a distinct dog breed although there is a lot of confusion between these dogs, the Jack Russell and the Parson Russell.

All do share a common ancestry but are now all considered separate dog breeds. Originally the name "Jack Russell Terrier" was a common named used for any mostly white, earth working, go to ground terrier dog breed.

Concerning the Russell dog breed, these working terriers originated in England while being further developed in Australia.

This is where standardization of this little dog breed was also first done. These little dogs, about 10 - 12 inches in height, are first and foremost working dogs even though many are kept as companion dogs.

And just what job were the Russells originally bred for? As earth terriers! In other words, they love to go to ground and hunt although they are also excellent competitors in many other sports or activities such as: agility, rally, tracking, obedience and conformation and they can also make great therapy or service dogs.

Highly intelligent, these intense and fiesty little terriers needs lots of socialization throughout their lives to become wonderful family members. So be aware of what you're getting into before you decide to share your home with a Russell.

These little dogs are live wires and are full of energy and are not suggested for first time owner of couch potatoes. Overall they are longer in body shape than they are tall and they can have a smooth, rough or broken coat that is predominately white in color. This are very healthy little dogs overall and can easily live between 14 - 20 years.

Country of origin: Originated in England but further developed in Australia
Lifespan: easily 14-20 years
Colors: Mostly white markings (51% or more) with tan, lemon or mahoghany colors
Known health problems: Congenital deafness, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Von Willebrands, among others
