Purebred Rottweiler
Dog Breed Information

Rottweilers

Description

The Rottweiler is a member of the Working Group. The ideal Rottie

is a medium large, robust, self-confident and powerful dog, black with clearly defined rust markings.

They are definitely not the dog for everyone.

Physically imposing, and highly intelligent, this is an intimidating looking dog that ranks over and over again at the top of the charts for being an excellent watchdog as well as a tremendous family protector.

They are a powerful dog with an inherent desire to protect home and family. He is by nature one of the most territorial breeds of dogs.

The Rotties strong will to work make it an especially good companion dog. They are often a top pick for anyone who is looking for a watchdog that has natural protection capabilities.

His compact and substantial build denotes great strength, agility, and endurance. He makes a loyal and wonderful companion, but requires time and training. They need plenty of exercise.

He is very intelligent dog with an independent spirit which can be both a challenge and a joy to train. Sometimes a dog as intelligent, courageous and confident as the Rottie comes bundled with a little extra stubbornness (in terms of training ability). However making this dog breed a household pet is well worth any extra time and patience you must initially put in.

This particular dog breed is thought to have a long history dating back to the time of the Romans where they were used as drover dogs, herding large stocks of cattle.

Males are characteristically more massive throughout with larger frame and heavier bone than females. Females are distinctly feminine, but with proportionate substance and structure.

The Rottie needs physical activity on a DAILY basis. Mental play and obedience lessons are also highly recommended for this intelligent dog. Vigorous games and long walks are highly recommended.

The Rottie prefers colder weather and definitely enjoys the winter months. Typically it does not handle hot or humid weather well at all and can easily become overheated if worked too hard during the summer months.

Rottweilers stand 22 to 27 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh between 70 and 120 pounds, with the males slightly larger than the females. Typically sporting a docked tail and powerful thick muscles, the Rottweiler has a big-boned body and a coarse mid-length coat that is relatively easy to maintain to keep it in good condition.

They are good with children if socialized to them at an early age. This dog can easily live either indoors or outdoors, however this dog will always prefer to be indoors spending lots of time with its family pack.

Training and socialization of the Rottie needs to begin early on. Patient handling needs to start from puppy hood because this dog breed really does not like to be handled, particularly on their feet. Also, the Rottweiler puppy is very susceptible to canine parvovirus and could die if not given the proper vaccines.

A house with a fenced yard is always best for this breed. You must prove your leadership every day to this dog breed. Do not consider this dog breed if you do not have enough time to train the dog properly because you will just be setting yourself up for a behavioral nightmare.
