Redbone Coonhound
Purebred Dog Breed Information

Redbone Coonhound

Description

The Redbone Coonhound is a raccoon specialist, although he

is also used to hunt and tree cougar, bear, and bobcat.

He is always red, sometimes with a bit of white on the chest or paws and possesses a natural treeing instinct. The Redbone is the only solid colored coonhound.

An athletic-looking dog, he has clean lines, a well-muscled body, and tight feet. FYI, this breed does need a lot of physical exercise so be forewarned if you're a couch potato. They are a high energy dog.

This is an American breed and was developed in Georgia in the 1800's from foxhounds and bloodhounds.

The medium-sized Redbone is 22-27 inches tall with the shoulders slightly higher than the hips and weighing in at around 50-75 pounds. Their coat is short and smooth.

These Coonhounds can get along well with children and other pets if introduced to them at an early age. They are very confident dogs, can escape from just about anything, and can be very independent - somewhat like cats.

They do mature late, so puppyhood lasts a longer time than in most breeds and they can be very loud.

They will often chase other smaller animals so it is very important to socialize them at an early age with other kinds of animals, such as cats.

Grooming weekly is advised and the best home for this breed is in a rural or suburban setting with a secured, fenced yard and with owners who really enjoy the outdoors and physical activity.

Traditionally, the Redbone Coonhound is an extremely healthy breed that has no known health problems.

Country of origin: United States
Lifespan: 10-12 years
Colors: Red
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, arthritis in older dogs
Famous Redbones: Old Dan and Little Ann, in the novel "Where the Red Fern Grows"
