The Rat Terrier dog breed is the newest member of the AKC Miscellaneous Dog Group. These dogs are also an American dog breed and are known by many names such as: Feist, American Rat Terrier and the Ratting Terrier.
These little dogs were very popular in the 1920's to about the 1940's and were loved as both companion animals and also for their fantastic ability as killers of vermin on American farms.
These active little dogs do need exercise - they are not a lap dog by any means.
And temperament wise, they are "pure terrier" - so keep that in mind if you decide to bring one of these little dogs home with you. And what exactly do I mean by that? Just that these little dogs are extremely lively, playful, confident, active and absolutely fearless with no knowledge of their true small size.
They can be very good watchdogs and they can also be quite good with children if raised with them from an early age. They are also fairly easy to train and want to please their owners who often use them on hunting trips but as home companions as well.
These little dogs are very active! Remember, these little dogs are very active - so if you're looking for a lap dog, then this is not the breed for you. But if you're looking for a scrappy little dog that is fairly independent, playful and ready for anything, then you may want to consider a Rat Terrier.
Grooming wise, these active, muscular little dogs are a breeze to keep clean. Their short, close to the body coat only needs an occasional combing to remove dead hair and a bath from time to time.

You really should socialize these little dogs and not baby them too much though to avoid potential behavioral problems and territorial issues such as Small Dog Syndrome. They need to be keenly aware of the fact that the owner is the pack leader because if the owner doesn't assume leadership control these intelligent little dogs will have no problems assuming that role themselves.
