Pyrenean Shepherd -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

Pyrenean Shepherd

A new member of the AKC Miscellaneous Class, the Pyrenean

Shepherd, AKA the "pyr shep", is the smallest of the French herding dog breeds. In fact, this little dog can best be described as a miniature sheepdog.

In fact, in France, it is best known by the name "Berger".

There are two varieties of this dog breed: the Smooth-Faced and the Rough-Faced, as seen in the photo above.

Typically the Pyr is no taller than 20 inches at the withers.

They weigh, on average, 25-30 lbs and have a harsh and dense coat, sometimes compared to the feel of goats hair.

This dog breed needs constant exercise to positively channel its rather nervous energy.

They are naturally very distrustful of strangers, but can have a very lively, cheerful disposition when socialized properly from a young age.

Watch a few of these dogs in action

Puppies of both varieties (Smooth-Faced or Rough-Faced) can occur within the same litter. If rough faced, the hair on the dogs face should not be so profuse as to hide the eyes.

Their coat does not require trimming. Uncoiffed, harsh and dense, their coat should be softer and more woolly near the rump, and shorter on top of their muzzle.

Country of origin: France
Lifespan: very long lived, 9 - 15
Colors: Shades of fawn are most typical, brindle, grey, blue merle, black
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia
Famous Pyr Sheps: Simply the Best, World Agility Championships 2003 Medium Individual Winner

"Dogs laugh, but they laugh with their tails. What puts man in a higher state of evolution is that he has got his laugh on the right end." - Max Eastman
