See the end of this newsletter for unsubscribe information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Most Popular Purebred Dogs in the U.S. - 2005 • Labrador Retriever (137,867) • Golden Retriever (48,509) • Yorkshire Terrier (47,238) • German Shepherd Dog (45,014) • Beagle (42,592) • Dachshund (38,566) • Boxer (37,268) • Poodle (31,638) • Shih Tzu (28,087) • Miniature Schnauzer (24,144) The Miniature Schnauzer came in as 10th place this year, knocking the popular Chihuahua down to 11th place. The Miniature Schnauzer hasn't been in the Top 10 since 1990. Increases in the following smaller breeds over the past 10 years: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (735%), French Bulldog (305%), Brussels Griffon (231%) and Papillon (132%). A few larger breeds have also experienced record growth: Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (124%) and Ibizan Hound (141%). The English Foxhound is again the least-registered purebred dog (22 registrations) followed by the Harrier (42), Otterhound (44), American Foxhound (48) and the newly AKC-recognized Glen of Imaal Terrier (49). The Otterhound experienced the highest percentage growth of all purebred dogs over the past year: 91%. Registrations increased or remained steady in 2005 for 55 other pure breeds of dogs as well, including the Sussex Spaniel (73%), Ibizan Hound (56%), Black and Tan Coonhound (41%) and Bedlington Terrier (32%). The AKC registered 153 different breeds for a total of 920,804 dogs and 421,128 litters in the year 2005. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Few Dog Facts - Did You Know: • A dog’s normal temperature is between 100.2 and 102.8 degrees Fahrenheit and takes between 10 to 30 breaths each minute, depending on his level of activity. • Dogs should never be given over-the-counter medication made for people, unless specifically prescribed for it by a veterinarian. For instance, if aspirin is given incorrectly it can cause stomach bleeding in dogs. • Dog’s body cells contain the most pairs of chromosomes (heredity- carrying structures) of any mammal- 39 pairs. • Dogs have been used to determine whether twins are identical or fraternal because identicals have the same scent, but fraternals do not, no matter how much they may look alike.
