The Pumi is a new member of the AKC Miscellaneous Dog Group. They are used as a farm dog and do sheep herding jobs as well, even for pigs and cows and sheep as well.
These little working dogs are from Hungary and not known very well outside there however they seem to be gaining popularity also in Sweden and Finland. They are believed to have originated sometime around the 17th or 18th century.
They were originally used for herding, hunting, guarding and for catching rodents as well in their native Hungary. Now they often participate in herding trials but also in agility competitions, obedience and even dog dancing contests.

Needless to say, these medium sized little dogs are very active and need lots of exercise to keep them happy. And as with other herding dog breeds, they are quite intelligent and take to training quite well.
They have a very distinctive look and are well known for their thick, curly coats, and alert ears (with the tips slightly flopped at the tip). Color wise, they can come dressed in black, white, or a yellowish brown color complete with a dark mask.
Country of origin: Hungary Lifespan: 12-13 years Colors: Black, white, or a yellowish brown color Known health problems: Generally healthy but can suffer from hip dysplasia, patella luxation.
