national dog of France. These are extremely people-oriented dogs and people simply love them! Well known for their retrieving capabilities in the water they are a very active, intelligent, and elegant-appearing dog, squarely built, well proportioned, moving soundly, and carrying himself proudly. Properly clipped in the traditional fashion and carefully groomed, they have an air of distinction about them. Grooming with this breed is nearly an art form in itself. There are four generally accepted styles used for showing this dog breed. These “show quality clips” generally include shaping the coat to very exact specifications in some areas while completely shaving other areas all the way. These four show cuts are the Puppy Show Clip, Continental Clip, English Saddle Clip and Sporting Clip. In addition to these there are five common “pet quality” clips that are employed with non-show or pet owned dogs. They are known as the Bikini Clip, Kennel Clip, Dutch Clip (two styles) and Puppy Pet Clip.

The words Standard, Miniature, and Toy are used to denote size only. All of these different sizes are still considered one breed of dog. The three different sizes have distinct definitions according to the AKC and in dog shows, the different sizes are determined by the dogs height at the shoulder. Standards are defined by being taller than fifteen inches at the shoulder. Miniatures must stand no more than fifteen inches but more than ten inches at the shoulder, and Toys must be ten inches or less. Some breeders offer "Teacup" sizes as well. Even though the AKC does not recognize the Teacup distinction, many breeders consider a dog that is eight inches or less at the shoulder (when full grown) to be a Teacup. These dogs are good with children and other pets and are best kept indoors with regular exercise. They do require extensive grooming however, but they are very easy to train.
