Pomeranian

Description

A member of the Toy group, the Pomeranian is a magnificent small

family pet. He is very alert in character.

They exhibit intelligence in expression, are buoyant in deportment, very inquisitive by nature, cocky, commanding, and very animated as he gaits about.

Weighing in at under 7 pounds, he is definitely a force to be aware of. They do need daily exercise but can get it indoors or outside on a nice stroll or playing a fun game of fetch.

These dogs are not meant to live outdoors due to their need for human companionship as well as their inability to withstand hot or cold temperatures.

Be aware, they are prone to early tooth loss so be careful to clean the teeth regularly.

Their coat gives the appearance of being very difficult to care for. Actually it is actually quite easy to care for; a regular brushing will keep the coat in good condition.

This breed descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland and boasts that distinctive feathered tail that fans forward and over the back. Believe it or not, the original Pomeranian dogs weighed as much as 30 pounds! It is said that the Japanese Spitz carries the closest resemblance to the Pom's true ancestors.

At some point in time these dogs were then purposely bred down in size. Hence, we now have that miniature sled dog from an area probably located in Pomerania, hence the dog breeds name “Pomeranian”.

There is an abundant ruff area around the neck and chest area and the profuse double coat usually comes in solid colors, and sometimes in patterns as well. The AKC recognizes thirteen colors or color combinations in this breed.

They are better with adults and older, more mature, children and are totally devoted to their favorite human.

Country of origin: Pomerania
Lifespan: 12-15 years
Colors: Any solid color is allowed, but the most common are red, orange, white, cream, blue, brown or black.
Known health problems: Early tooth loss, luxating patellas, skin problems, eye infections
Famous Pomeranians: Mozart, Marie Antoinette and Emile Zola all owned this breed as well; In The TV show, The Nanny, there is a one named Chester; The Osbournes, the family owns one; In The X-Files, Dana Scully adopts one
