Pomeranian - Purebred
Dogs and Puppies

A member of the AKC Toy group, the Pomeranian is a magnificent small family pet. He is very alert in character. These little dogs definitely love to be pampered and petted by their owner's.

At an average size of 4 1/2 pounds (male) or 5 1/2 pounds (female) he makes a faithful and devoted little addition to the family. They do need daily exercise but can get it indoors or outside on a nice stroll or playing a fun game of fetch.

They exhibit intelligence in expression, are buoyant in deportment, very inquisitive by nature, cocky, commanding, and very animated as he gaits about. Be aware, though, they are prone to early tooth loss so be careful to clean their teeth regularly.

Poms are not meant to live outdoors due to their need for human companionship as well as their inability to withstand very hot or very cold temperatures.

Their coat does give the appearance of being very difficult to care for. The Pomeranian practically has two coats to care for; a short fluffy undercoat and a longer straight topcoat which covers the whole body. Actually it is actually quite easy to care for; a regular brushing will keep the coat in good condition.

They are better overall with adults and older, more mature, children and are totally devoted to their favorite human.

This breed descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland and boasts that distinctive feathered tail that fans forward and over the back.

Believe it or not, the original Pomeranian dogs weighed as much as 30 pounds! It is said that the Japanese Spitz carries the closest resemblance to the Pom's true ancestors.

At some point in time these dogs were then purposely bred down in size. Hence, we now have that miniature sled dog from an area probably located in Pomerania, hence the dog breeds name “Pomeranian”.

There is an abundant ruff area around the neck and chest area and the profuse double coat usually comes in solid colors, and sometimes in patterns as well. The AKC recognizes thirteen colors or color combinations in this breed.

Country of origin: Pomerania
Lifespan: 12-15 years
Colors: Any solid color is allowed, but the most common are red, orange, white, cream, blue, brown or black.
Known health problems: Early tooth loss, luxating patellas, skin problems, eye infections
Famous Pomeranians: Mozart, Marie Antoinette and Emile Zola all owned this breed as well; In The TV show, The Nanny, there is a one named Chester; The Osbournes, the family owns one; In The X-Files, Dana Scully adopts one
