dog and his short odor-free coat requires little grooming while twice-weekly brushing keeps his shedding to a minimum. These dogs are an ancient dog breed. These dogs played a very important role in the daily life of many kings and nobles in Ancient Egypt. Many people believe that the ancient Phoenicians took these medium-sized sight hounds with them when they settled on Malta. These dogs were used specifically to help the Egyptian nobility to hunt rabbits and gazelles. Historically speaking, the Pharaoh Hound is the oldest domesticated dog in recorded history. The Pharaoh makes a wonderful watchdog as he is very observant and possesses keen eyesight, acute hearing, and will bark promptly at the approach of strangers. The Pharaoh must be permitted to make up his own mind about people and situations. He is playful and enjoys children, but cannot be expected to readily accept children he does not know. The Pharaoh is a very fast, active, and alert dog. He is not a good candidate for apartment living unless his owner is prepared to give him lots of daily exercise.

They should not be trusted with any kind of small non-canine pets because of his high prey drive. It is also very important not to let this dog off the leash except in a safely contained area with a tall fence (they are great jumpers). Pharaohs are about 21 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh typically between 45 to 60 pounds. They have an athletic, graceful body with a short coat that needs very little grooming. Their coat color may be tan or red and they have amber colored eyes. The Pharaoh Hound can easily live in an apartment as long as he is given enough daily exercise. One important thing to remember always is that this breed can easily jump a six-foot fence if it wanted to. Also, these dogs will not tolerate wild play and rough housing and may snap in protest if pushed too far. The Pharaoh Hound needs daily exercise to remain happy and fit and socialization from a young age is highly encouraged. They also make great watchdogs and are affectionate with their owners but reserved and cautious with strangers. Country of origin: Egypt Return from Pharaoh Hound to Hound Group
