Vendéens have only been known in the United States since the 1980s. Because of their raggedy, scruffy good looks, small size, and sparky personality they have won many admirers. They are also very happy and very independent little dogs. Although a scent hound, he is much more like a terrier - curious and busy, determined and smart needing plenty of exercise and attention. Overall, longer than tall, both sexes should measure 13-15 inches tall at the withers. The double coat should be "natural" in look and a lot of grooming is not needed as with some other breeds.

The Petit Bassett Griffon Vendéens are good family dogs and will demand attention if their owner does not give it to them. They are generally good with other dogs however they should not be trusted with non-canine pets. A bored or lonely dog will make up it's own "entertainment " if not provided with appropriate entertainment so make sure they have lots of toys, chews and the like to keep them busy.
