Otterhound

Description

A member of the Hound group, The Otterhound is a large breed

of dog developed in England to hunt otter.

They generally weigh between 80 and 120 pounds

The otter were preying on the fish in the rivers and streams to an annoying extent. (Otter hunting is now banned).

This large dog breed has webbed feet and a rough, double coat.

It has an extremely sensitive nose, and is inquisitive and perserverent in investigating scents.

This hound hunts its quarry on land and in water. They do get along with other animals and are good-natured with children. They also have a very melodious voice, which they are known to use freely and are energetic dogs who need plenty of room for exercise and exploration.

It has plenty of energy and endurance and requires much more energetic exercise than just daily walks so keep this in mind. This is a good dog breed of choice for very active families as they do have high exercise requirements.

A securely fenced yard is a must for owners of an Otterhound. This dog breed is covered with a shaggy coat that is relatively easy to care for and a good weekly brushing will keep shedding to a minimum. They are large dogs - males are typically 26-28 inches tall and 95-115 pounds, females are a bit smaller.

Country of origin: England
Lifespan: 10-13 years
Colors: All colors are accepted, but the most common are sandy, blue and white, gray, black and tan
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, bloat, epilepsy
