October 07 breed of the month - Toller

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

October 07 Breed of the Month - Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

• Their nickname is "Toller" for short.

• The Toller dog breed is highly intelligent and a very fast learner - they love to work.

AKA, Little River Duck Dog, Little Red Duck Dog and the Yarmouth Toller.

• The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever dog breed originated in Canada.

• I have been told by many breeds that a Toller is a mental and physical commitment - if you can’t keep this dog busy, then don’t get one.

• This is an energetic dog - it needs plenty of exercise.

Return from Basenji October 07 breed of the month to Hound Group

"The next-door neighbors had a German police dog that... acts as a bodyguard for the lady of the house and one day we was over there and the host says to slap his Mrs. on the arm and see what happened so I slapped her on the arm and I can still show you what happened." -- Ring Lardner

• This breed is the smallest of the retrievers.

• These dogs are frequently mistaken for a Golden Retriever or Spaniel mix of some sort.

• Tollers have a water repellent double coat and webbed feet.

They do not need to be bathed regularly since this removes the important oils from their skin and coat, which gives their coat the ability to be water resistant in the first place.
