The Golden Retriever

• The Golden Retriever was originally developed as a gundog.

• They were bred to have a soft mouth.

• These are not considered to be "one man dogs" and are generally very friendly with both strangers and friends so if you want a guard dog, this isn't the breed to choose.

• They have webbed feet and are excellent swimmers.

• Goldens were the first dogs to gain obedience titles.

• This dog breed needs to be around people to be happy and are often called velcro dogs.

• Daily walks are very important to their physical and mental health - don't forget the socialization either.

• Some of the most common health issues associated with Goldens are allergies, cancer, and hypothyroidism.

• The AKC recognized this dog breed in 1932.

• His double-coat is also water-repellant .

• Goldens rank as one of the 10 most popular breeds in the United States according to AKC® Registration Statistics.

• They are commonly referred to by many as "Golden's".
