Dog Breed of the Month - November 2007
Norwegian Elkhound

Norwegian Elkhound

Purebred Dog Breed of the Month

• Historically, these dogs were used in Scandinavia as a hunter

of big game, like moose and elk.

• This dogs hunting goal is to simply hold the moose at until the hunter arrives.

• These dogs are also known by the names Gray Norwegian Elkhound, Norwegian Moose Dog and Small Grey Elk Dog.

• President Herbert Hoover had a Norwegian Elkhound named "Weejie".

• These dogs were hunting and guard dog companions to the Vikings.

• The elkhound has also been known to pull sleds.

• These dogs are a member of the Spitz or Nordic group of dogs.

• The dog we know as the Elkhound today is the same dog who traveled with the Vikings many, many years ago.

• The Norwegian Elkhound is a double coated breed with both a woolly undercoat and longer guard hairs.

• This is not necessarily an energetic breed of dog - it does not need lots of exercise.
