Norwegian Buhund -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

A new member of the AKC Herding Group, the Norwegian Buhund is a typical spitz type dog of medium size and shape. This breed is also known as the Norsk Buhund or Norwegian Sheepdog. The Buhund is a very ancient breed. There are records of this dog breed going as far back as 870.

They are lightly built dogs, with a short, compact body, erect, pointed ears, and a tail carried curled over the back in typical Spitz-like fashion. Typically, the Norsk Buhund ranges in size from about 17 to 18 inches in height, and around 30 to 40 lbs in weight.

Their original job and purpose was as both a farm and herding dog. "Bu" can mean "stock" or "farm" and "hund" means "dog". Buhunds have herded all sorts of stock such as cattle, pigs, sheep and even reindeer!

It is known that Vikings took Norwegian Buhunds with them to various settlements in both Iceland and Britain making it very possible that these dogs could have easily been one of the many foundation stocks for several other herding dog breeds in that area.

They are very alert and curious dogs - energetic, agile, and are also quick learners. They are also good dogs for dog sports and for many athletic activities.

Country of origin: Norway
Lifespan: very long lived, 13 - 15
Colors: wheaten and black
Known health problems: eye and hip problems

Return from Norwegian Buhund to AKC Herding Group Information

"The Saint Bernards work best in teams of at least three dogs. They are sent out on patrols following storms, and they wander the paths looking for stranded travelers. If they come upon a victim, two dogs lie down beside the person to keep him warm; one of the two licks his face to stimulate him back to consciousness. Meanwhile, another dog will have already started back to the hospice to sound the alarm." - Stanley Coren
