Manchester Terrier

Description

A member of the Terrier group, The Manchester Terrier was known

long ago as "the gentlemen's terrier."

This breed was bred in England to kill vermin and to course small game.

This breed comes dressed in a small, black, short-coat with distinctive rich mahogany markings and a tapered style tail.

There are two varieties of this breed: the toy and the standard.

Except for size and ear options, there are no differences between the Standard and Toy except that the Toy is a diminutive version of the Standard variety.

Though he looks like a Miniature Doberman Pinscher, these two breeds are not related in any way. It is true that the Manchester came from the result of crosses between the Black & Tan Terrier and the Whippet.

These dogs need plenty of exercise but can do well inside without an outside exercise area. Do not let this breed off the leash unless in a secured and fenced area unless it has been trained, because he likes to run and he especially likes to chase.

These dogs are also good companions for the elderly. Overall they do prefer warmer climates.

Country of origin: England
Lifespan: 15 or more years
Colors: Black with distinctive rich mahogany or tan markings
Known health problems: von Willebrand's disease, Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome, lens luxation, and hypothyroidism

" In a dog-eat-dog world, it is the dogmatic domain of dog lovers to offer dogdom a dog's chance to rise above the dog days for a doggone good time." - AKC Gazette August 1991
