July 2011 Dog Breed of Month

July 2011 Dog Breed of Month
The Italian Greyhound

July 2011 Dog Breed of Month

• The Italian Greyhound is the smallest member of the group of dogs called the sighthounds.

• These energetic little dogs can make really great family pets as long as they are in the right home.

• Do not leave these dogs unsupervised with smaller pets such as rats, hamsters, etc. - remember, they have been bred for centuries to help chase down small animals.

• They come in many different colors - some with patches of either tan or white.

• These handsome little dogs are typically very energetic, graceful, and playful.

• The typical life expectancy for this wonderful little dog is usually around 13 to 15 years or so.

Italian Greyhound

• They are also known by the names Piccolo Levriero Italiano and IG (short for Italian Greyhound)

• Socialization is also highly suggested for this dog breed - especially while young and around other people and pets.

• These little dogs do need lots of exercise - so don't let the small size fool you - this can be a very active dog breed.

• You might not know it by looking at these little guys, but this is an ancient dog breed. You can find images of dogs that look very much like the IG back over 6000 years ago in Egyptian tombs.

• Note: Any owners considering choosing one of these dogs needs to be aware that these little dogs need to have a very firm "pack leader" who is in control. Also, these little dogs can be somewhat fragile, especially as puppies, and can easily break a leg if not supervised properly.
