Irish Setter

Description

A member of the AKC Sporting group, The Irish Setter is an active,

and aristocratic bird dog, a swift-moving hunter, rich red in color, and substantial yet elegant in build.

The red and white Irish Setter first appeared in Ireland back in the late 18th century and was later perfected as the beautiful dog breed we know today back in the 19th century.

Their coat color can be in various rich shades of chestnut to mahogany and may need a touch-up clipping every few months.

This Setter's silky, medium to long coat requires weekly attention to avoid mats and tangles. These dogs do need plenty of physical activity.

Standing over two feet tall at the shoulder, this breed has a straight, fine, glossy coat that is longer on the ears, chest, tail, and back of legs.

These dogs are well known for being quite friendly and affectionate. Additionally they are loveable, high-spirited and full of energy.

Males weigh in at around 70 pounds, and about 60 pounds for females. At home, they are a sweet-natured, trainable companion but they do require daily exercise and they do need a lot of exercise. These dogs are happiest as a house pet and requires a lot of affection from their family.

The Irish Setter likes lots of exercise and requires long walks and could be quite destructive if left alone too long or not given enough exercise. They love to run and are quite fast compared to many other setter breeds.

They are good with children but can be quite rambunctious with smaller ones. They can also be very good with other pets, with the exception of birds. Originally used as a gun dog, this breed now does little hunting in the United States where it is mostly kept as a companion dog.

This athletic, high-strung breed needs a house with a fenced yard and a firm and patient leader. They are not an early developer and they frequently require more training than some other breeds. He would make an excellent companion dog for a jogger or athletic family.
