Ibizan Hound Purebred
Dog Breed Information

Ibizan Hound

Description

A member of the Hound Group, The Ibizan Hound is an even

tempered, affectionate, loyal, extremely versatile and very trainable dog.

The Ibizan's clean-cut lines, large prick ears, and light pigment give it a very unique appearance.

Ibizan history is traceable back to approximately 3400 B.C. and was drawn on rock, stone, and papyrus.

He was a favorite among the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Romans for his ability to locate rabbits and other small game animals by sight and then run them down.

He makes an excellent family pet, and is well suited to the breed ring, obedience, tracking, and lure-coursing. Keep in mind that they can be dog-aggressive and do have a high prey drive toward small animals.

Obedience training, socialization and training should all begin early in the puppies life.

He exhibits a keen, natural hunting instinct with much determination and stamina in the field. These Hounds are very neat dogs who clean themselves much like cats.

The Ibizan is friendlier overall than a Saluki or a Borzoi, however, they do have a temperament more similar to that of the Whippet. Though they are affectionate with his owners, they do not need or desire constant attention like many dog breeds.

There are 3 varieties: smooth, long and wire coated and the color may be red or tan with white on the chest, forehead, and legs.

The Ibizan usually stands about 22.5 to 27.5 inches in height at the shoulder and weighs between 40 to 50 pounds.

"Beezers" require a great deal of exercise and should only be allowed off a leash within a fenced in area. They are very agile dogs, able to jump great heights from a standstill and require a great deal of exercise.

It is recommended that owners of these dogs have fences at least 6' in height. The Ibizan Hound is even-tempered, affectionate, loyal, and friendly, and makes an excellent family pet.

Best home: A quiet, predictable home, such as an apartment is fine as long as this dog receives plenty of exercise. The best owner would be a calm, confident and patient owner who has plenty of time to socialize the dog. Keep in mind that small animals in the home may create a problem due to this breed's high prey drive and hunting background.

Country of origin: Egypt
Lifespan: 10-12 years
Colors: Solid white or red, white and red, white and tan
Known health problems: Drug allergies, seizures, Axonal Dystrophy
