The hound group dog breeds were bred to help man capture

game by tracking prey using their wonderful senses of sight or smell.

Hunting is probably the job that comes most easily to the dog. Today, hunting with dogs is mostly considered a sport.

Some hounds use their incredibly acute sense of smell to follow a trail - these are classified as scent hounds.

Other types of hounds can relentlessly run down their quarry because of their incredible speed and stamina - these are classified as sight hounds.

Additionally, this dog group has some of the oldest members of dog breeds known to man. Some hound breeds were also developed to hunt specific quarry - such as the Irish Wolfhound (hunted wolves) or the short little Dachshund (a Badger specialist).

This dog breed directory is designed to present you information about some of these different hound breeds, and to also help you choose the best type of purebred dog for you. Feel free to browse around for your perfect canine friend.
