Herding Group Purebred Dog Breed Information

The AKC Herding Group is the newest AKC dog group. It was created in 1983 and its members were formerly members of the Working Group. This group contains some of the most ancient dog breeds and is also quite diverse.
Bred for stamina and agility, these herding dog breeds work with their masters all day long out in the fields with the flocks and are trained to take verbal commands from a distance. Overall these are very hearty dog breeds, able to work long periods of time on rough land terrain and bred to withstand harsh weather conditions. The super intelligent herding dog breeds were bred primarily to help man drive livestock and to keep them all under control, with or without human supervision. These dog breeds were created to work side by side with man as drovers (driving cattle and sheep) and also as herders (to keep the flock under control). Without the aid of the herding dog breeds the great agricultural lands all over the world may never have been settled as we know them today. | | There are numerous farms even today that raise and work with livestock daily. There you will find Herding dogs working hand in hand as both companions and guard dogs. Overall, these intelligent herding dog breeds make excellent pets and respond beautifully to many different kinds of training such as agility, search and rescue and obedience. Their super intelligence has allowed them to be trained in other areas of service as well. | Keep in mind that these AKC Herding Group dogs require plenty of exercise and do need a job for mental stimulation. They are also known for their exceptional speed and strength but many also need moderate coat care too. These Herding Group dog breeds are usually easier to train than many other dog breeds too. This dog breed directory is designed to present you information about some of these different AKC herding dog breeds, and to also help you choose the best type of purebred dog for you. Feel free to browse around for your perfect canine friend.
